Volkswagen Golf Mk4 features

The Volkswagen Golf Mk4, also known as the VW Golf 4 or Golf IV, is the fourth generation of the Volkswagen Golf series. It was launched in October 1997 for the 1998 model year and was produced until 2006 (some markets continued production until 2010, and Brazil until 2014) [1].

Design and Engineering:

The Golf Mk4 was a deliberate attempt by Volkswagen to move the Golf series upmarket, with a high-quality interior and higher equipment levels [1].

It featured a compact car body style with options for a 3-door or 5-door hatchback and a 5-door station wagon [1].

The Golf Mk4 was built on the Volkswagen Group A4 (PQ34) platform and shared its platform with other vehicles such as the Volkswagen Jetta Mk4 (Bora), Audi A3 Mk1, Audi TT Mk1, Volkswagen New Beetle, SEAT León Mk1, SEAT Toledo Mk2, and Škoda Octavia Mk1 [1].

Engine options included petrol and diesel engines ranging from 1.4 to 3.2 liters, with power outputs ranging from 90 to 150 PS (66 to 110 kW) [1].

Transmission options included automatic and manual transmissions, with the R32 model featuring a 6-speed DSG transmission [1].

Features and Innovations:

The Golf Mk4 introduced the Haldex 4 Wheel Drive system, previously only available on Audi products, which was used with certain engine variants [1].

It was one of the first Golfs to come with Xenon headlights (optional) and rain-sensing wipers [1].

The Mk4 Golf was praised for its quality improvements, but criticized for its handling characteristics, particularly compared to the Mk1 Ford Focus of the time [1].

Variants:

Golf Cabriolet: Instead of creating a convertible version of the Mk4 Golf, Volkswagen facelifted the front bumper, fenders, hood, and headlights of the Mk3 Golf Cabrio to resemble the styling of the Mk4 Golf [1].

Golf Mk4 Variant: Introduced in 1999, the Golf Mk4 Variant was the wagon version of the Golf Mk4. It was discontinued in 2006 and succeeded by the Volkswagen Golf Mk5 Variant [1].

Volkswagen Bora/Jetta Mk4: Volkswagen also produced a saloon version of the Mk4 Golf, called the Volkswagen Bora (Jetta in North America and South Africa). It featured unique rear doors, front wings, and bonnet, while the interior was almost identical to the Golf [1].
